Lateral Flow Test (LFT) packs - Frequently Asked Questions

This type of test is part of the States of Guernsey’s response to the pandemic and its commitment to controlling infection.

They give quick results, similar to a pregnancy test. You will be able to carry out the test yourself.

There is no formal requirement for a negative LFT test to be obtained prior to arriving into the Bailiwick, however it is still strongly recommended for non-residents to test before travel if at all possible, whether it be using a pre-organised LFT or PCR test. This will help visitors to avoid any unforeseen costs or potential logistical difficulties should they test positive after arriving. 

It is advised that tests are done in the morning as if you are positive, viral load will be higher first thing in the morning, so therefore more likely to pick up any potential positive cases.

Once you have performed the test a few times, you will find that it only takes a few minutes of ‘hands-on time’ to perform the test, and that it is not difficult to do.

What if I can’t do the test in the morning?

We would prefer that tests are done in the morning for the reasons mentioned above.

If this isn’t possible, then we would accept that you do it in the evening as the most important fact is that you are taking the test.

Lateral flow tests kits are single use only and can be disposed of safely at home.

All parts of the test kit that are plastic and any plastic packaging is not recyclable and should be disposed of in general waste.  This applies whether the test result is positive or negative.

If there are any paper items such as card packaging or an instruction or information leaflet these can be recycled and should be put into your white recycling bin.

It is important that all the parts of the kit are disposed of correctly.

As a recovered case you should take up your usual surveillance testing from Day 17 (7 days after your recovery date).  If you have a positive LFT more than 7 days after your recovery date, please call the clinical helpline on 220001 or 220002 or complete the online form at https://www.gov.gg/covidnotification.

We would also discourage you from doing LFTs between Day 10 and Day 17 as you may still test positive but are highly unlikely to be infectious after 10 days in self-isolation.
