Why did we close schools?

The decision was taken to close all schools, colleges and early years providers until Guernsey was able to provide on-island testing of samples from suspected coronavirus infections.

At the time of the school closures there were many tests waiting for results and we couldn’t be certain that we were in the containment phase of the coronavirus outbreak on Guernsey.

As such the decision was made to pause the current education provision within the Islands. This included both private and public schools, colleges, pre-schools, nurseries and childminders. However, it excluded children of critical workers.

Further information regarding critical workers and the arrangements for their children can be found at

All children will be returning to States-run primary, secondary and special schools on Monday 8th June 2020 (the College of Further Education will welcome many students back on Monday 1st June).
