Public Health has set up a controlled waste collection system for people who have tested positive with COVID-19. Controlled waste, in this instance, is defined as:
“Any waste which consists of blood or other body fluids, excretions, swabs, dressings, wipes, sanitary products and being waste which unless rendered safe, may prove hazardous and may cause infection to any person coming into contact with it.”
This waste will need to be placed into a plastic bag and then double bagged with a yellow controlled waste bag. You will be provided with yellow controlled waste bags if you are tested positive. General household waste, food, packaging, sharp items, glass items and any other materials that are non-clinical must not be placed in the yellow bag.
All waste, including both general and clinical waste as well as recycling and food bags should be left untouched for a minimum of 72 hours before being left outside for collection. This significantly reduces the risk of contamination.
When this controlled waste is ready to be collected, please contact the collection team on 01481 707333. You will be provided with clear instructions on what to do and the estates team will arrange a suitable time to collect your waste.
