Essential Travel

The Bailiwick of Guernsey is currently in lockdown. For more information on what this means, please go to: https://covid19.gov.gg/guidance/business/lockdownupdate

Only essential travel into the Bailiwick can take place. Those planning on travelling will need to apply for an Essential Travel Permit.

If you are leaving the Bailiwick and do not intend to return, an Essential Travel Permit is not required.

If your application is successful you will need to create a Travel Tracker account and register your journey one or two days before travelling into the Bailiwick. The only exemption to this is intra-Bailiwick flights. For more information please go to: https://covid19.gov.gg/guidance/travel/traveltracker

From 00:01 on Wednesday 20th January the Civil Contingencies Authority has temporarily suspended the country and region categorisations. All arrivals into the Bailiwick will be classified as ‘Category 4’. For more information read the media release.

Anyone travelling to Alderney or Sark from Guernsey will now also have to isolate for 14 days on arrival.

Those planning on travelling will need to apply for an Essential Travel Permit. It is an offence to enter the Bailiwick of Guernsey (the islands of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark) without the relevant authorisation and subsequent documentation. The documentation must be obtained prior to travel and presented upon entry at the border.  Wherever possible, please print a hard copy of your Essential Travel Permit. A false declaration is unlawful under the emergency regulations.

There is no provision in the regulations or provided within this webpage to enable or encourage travel for any leisure purposes. This includes off-island visits to friends and family and visiting second homes or holiday homes. It should be made clear that doing so would result in individuals breaking the law upon their return.

To determine which permit you need to apply for please go to the pages below.

Please submit your application at least 7 working days before you plan to travel wherever possible. These are new processes for our team so please work together with us to provide as much notice as possible where there is not an urgent need to travel. Our target will be to turnaround applications within 72 hours and sooner if possible.

Please note if your application is associated with an application for a new employment permit this will take longer and will be subject to the standard population management processes and scrutiny from an essential travel perspective.

It should be noted that all applicants, unless otherwise advised of a variation to self-isolation requirements and/or working under strict method statements, will be required to complete the full self-isolation requirements and so decisions are being made against a low risk profile.
