Community support and volunteer services

Volunteer Guernsey -  St John, alongside the Guernsey Community Foundation and the Association of Guernsey Charities - are coordinating a number of volunteer services, including prescription and food collection and delivery. For more information, please call 01481 742147.

A Caring Caller scheme has also been launched, which is a new service to help those who are feeling lonely or isolated. Individuals can contact St John directly or be referred by family or friends. For more information, please email caring.caller@stjohn.gg or call 01481 720088.

Carers Guernsey has issued some guidance for carers during this time, which can be found online at www.carers.gg.

Citizens Advice is also able to give free and confidential advice, regarding finances, employment, relationships and housing matters by telephone on 01481 242266.

A community led initiative offering support to islanders through their Facebook page. They are working with St John to help them with the increase in offers of support and coordination.

The Guernsey Welfare Service continues to support low income families and those that may have recently lost their income because of COVID-19. Visit the Guernsey Welfare Service website or contact them on 07839 724300 or via email at guernseywelfare@cwgsy.net

The Guernsey Voluntary Service (GVS) are continuing to deliver their Meals on Wheels service and have put in place additional volunteers to meet demand. To receive Meals on Wheels you must be referred to the GVS by a doctor or other medical professional, and the facility is available to anyone who is housebound, not just the elderly.

Bailiwick Social Prescribing Link Workers are acting as the link through GPs for those ‘shielding’ due to underlying health conditions. The two workers are both qualified, trained and very experienced in working with people with mild mental health issues such as loneliness and anxiety, as well as multiple / more complex non-clinical needs (e.g. supporting people to access ESS and Housing etc.)

They can offer a friendly person to chat to, ensure people have the right information (from gov.gg) and that they understand it and offer reassurance. They can also support people to identify their needs and help people to access practical support such as prescription collection, bill payments and shopping.

Autism Guernsey has put together a number of resources about Coronavirus.

The Guernsey Veterans Support Group are providing shopping services to veterans in Guernsey. This includes food, basic supplies and medicines. More information can be found on their leaflet or by calling 07781 409437.

A Telephone Buddy system has also been established. If you would like to talk to somebody, please call 07839 774863.

Health Connections are working as part of Volunteer Guernsey to signpost individuals to support, delivery of food and medication, transport services to medical and vaccination appointments, and engaging directly with the elderly and vulnerable who must self-isolate. The Bailiwick of Guernsey Victim Support and Witness Service is an independent charity that was set up 1998 to help victims of crime.

The service can provide free and confidential support to anyone who has been affected by burglary, assault, domestic abuse, fraud, harassment, recent or historical sexual abuse, murder, rape or any other crime. Staff and volunteers are police checked and trained in providing emotional and, where appropriate, practical support to anyone over the age of 18. The Youth Commission have adapted their services to continue to provide support to the young people for example offering support packs for young people with low moods, worries or to help them manage their emotions. The packs include advice, information and self-help tips.
